History
The following information was derived from the November 1986 issue of the Pedal Power Press
On October 2, 1985, a meeting was held at the Linden Hof Restaurant in Bay City for the purpose of establishing a bicycling club in the Tri-City area. The purpose of the club would be to provide cycling activities for members, to promote cycling in the Tri-City area, to promote bicycling safety and education and to sponsor bicycling related activities for the good of the surrounding communities. At subsequent meetings club colors were chosen (yellow and royal blue), a monthly newsletter was begun (Pedal Power Press with Kathy Warszawski as Editor) and a logo was decided upon.
During our first year, the club provided more than 1,000 miles of organized rides and also rode as a group in several rides including the Magic Ride (to provide funds for Bay County Child Abuse Prevention) and the Great Northwest Tour.
The 1986 Liberty Tour was the Tri-City Cyclists' first attempt at an invitational, club-sponsored tour. It drew over 100 riders who rode their choice of three routes, and even managed to make a few dollars for our treasury. Due to the success of the first tour, the Liberty Tour would be annual club event for many years to come.
The major club ride of that first season was the Tour de Indian River. Approximately 25 riders took part in this four day trip based at Burt Lake State Park. A total of 280 miles of marked, mapped routes were available for participants.
In August of 1986, the Tri-City Cyclists, along with St. Mary's Hospital, co-sponsored the Biking for Burns invitational ride. Over 250 riders raised $22,000 for the burn unit at St. Mary's. The Biking for Burns ride was part of a statewide program of rides to provide monies for burn units and burn centers throughout the state of Michigan. Thanks to the hard work of TCC members, the club's share of the earnings was over $6,000.
During the early years, the Tri-City Cyclists had a very active entertainment committee. Club members were treated to broomball games, polar bear rides and the ever-popular progressive dinners.
The club had over 100 members at the end of its first year.
